Compacted machinery is a natural structure that can be mined to obtain Components.
Summary
Compacted machinery tiles have 2,000 health each, making them slower to mine than stone or many ores, but still significantly faster than uranium and plasteel ore. They can be found in small veins, ranging from 3 to 6 tiles in size. Each mined block has a base yield of 2 components, however this is modified by factors such as the Difficulty setting and the mining yield of the pawn.
Analysis
Compacted machinery is one of the only ways to get more components early-game, aside from ship chunks and trading. Since components are used in many recipes, including several that gate further progression, they are extremely valuable, especially early-game where they are limited. While compacted machinery grants you some components, it's only a temporary solution until you have to trade for them or craft them at a fabrication bench once you have the appropriate research done. Still, they're rather effective in getting some much-needed components.
